Commit to implementing a self-certified deferred assessment scheme, ensuring assessment policies are inclusive

Lead Officer: Helen Slater, Education Officer

What is the issue about?

Students sometimes face unforeseen circumstances, such as illness or personal emergencies, which impact their ability to sit assessments. The current Individual Mitigating Circumstances (IMC) process provides support, but outcomes are confirmed only after the assessment, creating uncertainty that can add stress at the point when students most need support.

What are we asking the University to do?

We are seeking a firm commitment to implementing a self-certified deferred assessment scheme, inspired by models already in place at other institutions. This would provide students with a direct and accessible way to defer assessments when faced with unforeseen circumstances, reducing pressure and supporting their wellbeing. With ongoing work on inclusive education, this change aligns directly with the university’s priorities.

What will success look like?

  • The university formally agrees to adopt a self-certified deferred assessment scheme.

  • A clear plan and timeline for implementation are developed.

  • The scheme is designed to be applied consistently across all faculties.

  • The policy is communicated clearly and distinguished from existing processes, so students and staff understand how it works.
