What is the issue about?

Investment in campus sports facilities has often focused on meeting the performance and competitive requirements of student sport, with comparatively little consideration given to the spectator experience. As a result, there has been limited emphasis on the experience of students not only participating in sport but also supporting their friends, housemates, course mates, and wider University teams in competitive fixtures. 

This is particularly significant within the University of Bath community, where there is a strong culture of pride, engagement, and support for student sport. Spectating provides an important opportunity to foster a sense of belonging, strengthen community connections, and celebrate collective achievement. However, the lack of intentional spectator-focused design has often restricted these opportunities. 

In many cases, spectator capacity is limited by facility layouts, and access routes, which can constrain attendance and reduce the overall match-day atmosphere. Greater consideration of the spectator experience would not only enhance event engagement but also help to reinforce the University's sporting identity and the Bath spirit of students coming together to support one another and their teams. 

What are we asking the University to do?

We are asking the University to invest in the development of facilities and access routes to allow increased spectator capacity. This could include, for example, the installation of stands, coverings and score boards to improve spectator experience.
