Exercise for Wellbeing Buddies

Help other students to start a regular exercise programme.

Are you passionate about exercise, in any form, and like supporting other people in achieving their goals? We're looking for enthusiastic, and motivated students, to become an Exercise for Wellbeing Buddy, to encourage students to become active, to support wellbeing through our innovative supported exercise programme.

The ‘Get Active’ scheme, in Student Support, offers students who want to use exercise to improve their wellbeing the chance to try a variety of sports and exercise classes in a supported, small group environment.

Each session is supported by 2-3 Buddies, who provide a vital role in welcoming the students each week, helping everyone feel included in the session, encouraging students to have a go, as well as developing a relaxed atmosphere to connect and have fun.

The weekly opportunities for Exercise for Wellbeing Buddies could include; attending a weekly fitness class at the STV, organising an ad-hoc game of badminton, supporting our bespoke taster sessions with some of the SU sports clubs, and organising a regular activity of your choice using your Sport Pass (or going for a walk).

Buddies may be asked if they can meet a student in advance of a session, for example if a student is worried about turning up alone or getting lost, feels particularly nervous in a group or is perhaps struggling to motivate themselves to turn up. This extra support from Buddies can be extremely impactful.

You don't need to be a trained coach or an experienced athlete to be a buddy. An enthusiasm for exercising and helping others, and a commitment to the role are all you need!
