Improve the provision of third spaces in the city centre for students

Lead Officer: Benji Orford Thompson, SU President

What is the issue about?

Living in Bath is a central aspect of the student experience.

With the University’s growing student population and recent strategic focus on expansion into the city. It is crucial that third space provision for study and activities does not get left behind.

Without a focus on student spaces while expanding into the city centre, there is a risk students will not feel they are a part of the Bath community.

What are we asking the University to do?

We are asking the University to provide more City spaces for students. This means creating additional study areas, social spaces, and accessible facilities across the city not just on campus, so that students can feel more integrated into the wider community.

By increasing the availability of spaces such as study lounges, affordable food spots, and cultural or recreational hubs, the University would be supporting both student wellbeing and learning. More city-based spaces would also help ease overcrowding on campus, give students more flexibility in how and where they study, and strengthen connections between the student body and the city itself.

What will success look like?

An additional area in the City Centre, where students can:

  1. Study

  2. Host activities

  3. Relax
