Bath Marrow Shortlisted for Young Volunteer Team of the Year

The SU is excited to report that Bath Marrow has been shortlisted for Young Volunteer Team of the Year in the Bath & North East Somerset Community Awards 2024/25!

The SU is excited to report that Bath Marrow has been shortlisted for Young Volunteer Team of the Year in the Bath & North East Somerset Community Awards 2024/25! Public voting is now open, and they need your support.

Why Bath Marrow Matters

Every 14 minutes, someone in the UK is diagnosed with blood cancer. For many, a stem cell transplant is their only chance of survival—but finding a matching donor can be incredibly difficult, especially for patients from minority ethnic backgrounds. Anthony Nolan is the charity that connects patients with life-saving stem cell donors, funds ground-breaking research, and provides support before, during, and after transplant.

Joining the stem cell register is a simple but powerful act that could one day save a life. It costs Anthony Nolan £40 to add just one person to the register, which is why both recruitment and fundraising are crucial to their mission.

Bath Marrow’s Impact

This year, Bath Marrow worked hard to recruit donors and fundraise to support Anthony Nolan’s life-saving work. Some key achievements include:

  • Over 220 donors recruited so far this year (compared to 117 last year) and £885 raised.
  • Consistently running weekly donor recruitment stalls in the Library and STV, making it as easy as possible for students to join the register.
  • Targeted outreach to underrepresented ethnic groups, collaborating with cultural societies (Pakistani Soc, Indonesian Soc, Persian Soc, UBAS, Bangla Soc, and ACS) to highlight the urgent need for more ethnic minority donors.
  • Hero Week initiative in Semester 1, working with sports clubs (Rugby, Hockey, Rounders, Dodgeball, Sailing, Cheerleading, Lacrosse, Latin & Ballroom) to sign up 65 donors in one week.
  • Strong fundraising efforts, including the Marroween bake sale and raffle, sponsored by local businesses (The Pump Room, Knoops, Boom Battle Bar), raising £135.

Bath Marrow have been nominated under Category 3: Young Volunteer Team of the Year, so cast your vote now!
