Dealer's Choice

by Patrick Marber

This cracklingly tense play deals with themes of trust and loyalty in a whirlwind of masculine posturing and aggression. Marber's 1995 play deals with restaurant-owner Stephen, his son, employees and the sinister Ash, who come together to play a game of poker. The tensions between the characters - hidden under the surface in their daily lives - come savagely to the fore as the mistakes and grievances of the players are revealed. The seemingly secure world of the restaurant teeters on the edge, and even the turning of a card could send it toppling over.
